Mac mini said to be first US-built computer in Apple's domestic production push
Apple and Foxconn are moving Mac mini production to the US, says DigiTimes, contradicting earlier rumors that a redesigned Mac Pro would be the first to land in the country. Earlier this month, CEO Tim Cook told Brian Williams that Apple was planning to invest $100 million to bring Mac production home, and a spokesman for Foxconn has recently confirmed rumors that it would be expanding its operations in North America. According to DigiTimes, the company will run Apple’s new US-based production lines.
Components like Apple's Samsung-built SoCs are already manufactured in the US, and some of its computers, like custom-built iMacs, are already assembled in the country. But rather than just put more computers together in the US, Cook plans to focus on higher value added production, saying, "we could have quickly maybe done just assembly, but it’s broader because we wanted to do something more substantial.”

Caltech students invent terahertz chip that gives your phone x-ray vision
Students at the California Institute of Technology have invented a new chip that spits out terahertz waves at a rate of roughly 300 times per second. What does that mean for consumers? In the not too distant future, you’ll be able to buy a phone with a camera that can see through certain materials. Our headline says “x-ray vision”, but that’s a bit misleading. An x-ray is defined as a wavelength that measures between 0.01 nanometers and 10 nanometers in length. Terahertz waves on the other hand, they’re between 1 millimeter and 0.1 millimeters.
What are the practical uses of such waves? The students say you’ll be able to take a picture of a piece of chicken you’re eating and get an accurate measurement of how much fat is contains. Your phone will also be able to identify drugs, explosives, and weapons hidden inside everyday object. That might not sound too compelling, but then again the internet was invented so universities could easily exchange research papers. Today we have 1080p video streaming, Skype calls, and more social networks than we care to count.
When will this technology realistically reach mobile phones? This writer used to work in a research lab and is all too familiar with the painful transition that academic research needs to go through to end up in the private sector. He’d say at least half a decade, probably a full decade just to be on the safe side.
In the television show Star Trek the members onboard the space traveling vessel had devices that they could point at pretty much damn near everything and get a detailed profile of what it is they were looking at. The research that these students have published brings us one step closer to that reality.

Samsung working on 6.3-inch Galaxy Note 3, preparing to launch the Galaxy S4 at MWC 2013
Some interesting bits of news about the rumored Samsung Galaxy Note 3, as well as the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4, have surfaced online courtesy of a recent Korea Times report.
The report discusses Samsung’s upcoming display production plans. Apparently, the Korea-based electronics giant has decided to pare down production of LCDs, and throw its weight behind OLED technology and flexible screens, with plans to allocate a “mere” 1.8 trillion won (nearly $1.7 billion) for LCDs, out of its 6.6 trillion won (about $5.9 billion) total investment for display panels in 2013. This gives credence to some of the rumors floating around about the flagship devices Samsung is expected to release next year.

Here’s what IDC says is happening in the tablet market, this year and beyond
Research firms like IDC, Gartner, and others sometimes screw up their predictions big time. For instance, Gartner said in 2011 that Android will get 38% of the tablet market by, wait for it, 2015. And here we are, discussing IDC’s latest figures, which say that Android tablets already make up about 42% of the tablet market.
While it’s fun to predict market shares for years in advance, there’s really no telling what will happen six months from now, and four year predictions are pretty much useless in the tech world. But trends do matter and they are worth analyzing.
With this necessary caveat out of our way, here’s what IDC says it’s happening in the tablet market, this year and beyond.

Microsoft says Windows Phone 7.8 update coming in 'early 2013'
Microsoft today announced that it will bring Windows Phone 7.8 to existing Windows Phone 7.5 users in early 2013. The new software will add the ability to resize Live Tiles, a standout feature of Windows Phone 8, while also implementing some new security enhancements for Exchange users. New theme colors will also be included in the update, which Microsoft says will roll out to "as many devices as possible" in early 2013. The official announcement follows an early leaked build of Windows Phone 7.8 for the HTC HD7 and news that the latest version would arrive on handsets in China in the "coming weeks."
Though it doesn't include all of the improvements packed into Windows Phone 8, version 7.8 will ensure that owners of previous Windows Phone hardware (i.e. the Lumia 900) — who were essentially cut off from future milestone updates — will be able to enjoy at leastsome new functionality.
